Rutherford Church of Christ

Heaven is our highest goal

About Us

Christ's church in Rutherfordton — ordinary people like you, seeking to restore New Testament Christianity in its simplicity and love.

Who We Are

The Rutherford church of Christ is simply a congregation of Christian people who are seeking to follow the pattern of the church of the New Testament. We believe the Bible is the Word of God and a perfect guide for life and religion. We strive to find authority in the Scriptures for everything we teach and practice. If we plant the same seed as they did in the First Century, we will harvest the same crop - Christians. Nothing more, nothing less.

Members of this congregation come from various backgrounds. You will find people of different ages and walks of life among us. Some dress more formally and some more casually. What we all have in common is that we are God’s family — brothers and sisters with one another, trying our best to walk in the Light. Jesus is our Lord and Savior, and eternal life in heaven is our highest goal.

Where We Are From

The church that Jesus built was founded in the first century, not long after Jesus rose from the dead (Matthew 16:18). Our local congregation had humble beginnings when believers in Rutherford County planted a congregation here. We started meeting in a storefront in Spindale in 2005, moved to a storefront just north of Rutherfordton, and since 2013 have been blessed with our own building off Hwy 221 just north of R-S Central High School.

A Bible Church in the Modern World

Jesus said, “I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). By following the faith and practices we find in the New Testament, the church today can be the same church that existed in the days of the apostles. We have no sectarian organization, no denominational name, and no human doctrines or creeds. We emphasize a return to the New Testament pattern and seek to restore New Testament Christianity (Romans 16:16).

Pre-denominational

In the New Testament church there were no denominations. Religious division was forbidden (1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 3:1-4). Divisions into many different churches or denominations came about after Bible times because of departures from the Bible way of worship and doctrine. Since we strive to follow the Bible closely, the churches of Christ are not organized into a denomination and have no earthly headquarters, no state or national organization, and no central earthly government. Christ is the only head of the church, each congregation is autonomous and independent, and the Bible is our only guide (Ephesians 1:22; 5:23).

Where We Are Headed

It is our prayer that we are headed for a heavenly home with Jesus — and that we help others get there. We support a robust overseas mission effort and are focusing more on local evangelism. Our mission is the same as Jesus’ — to seek and to save the lost. We also serve our neighbors through a backpack program for hungry school children and a teddy-bear ministry for first responders to comfort small children. We also are active in local benevolence helping the homeless and downtrodden.

Join Our Journey

Christians try to live lives that are pure and holy. We realize, however, that we often fall short, make mistakes, and sin against our Father in heaven. As we repent, confess our sins, and obey the Lord, we can trust the grace of God and the blood of Christ to forgive us (Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:5-10).

If you believe God exists and are seeking diligently to follow Him, He promises to reward your search (Hebrews 11:6; Proverbs 2). Bring your Bible, your hardest questions, your desire for forgiveness, and your love for God. He has given us the roadmap — the pattern to follow to make it to heaven.

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)
